Anxiety — Therapy in Newcastle & the North East

Anxiety can feel like constant worry, racing thoughts, a tight chest or being permanently on edge. It's exhausting — and very treatable.

Anxiety is one of the most common reasons people seek therapy — and one of the most treatable. If you're living with persistent worry, a racing mind, physical tension or a creeping sense that something bad is about to happen, you're not alone.

What does anxiety feel like?

Anxiety shows up differently for everyone. For some it's a constant background hum of worry that never quite switches off. For others it arrives suddenly — a racing heart, shortness of breath, a feeling of unreality. Common experiences include:

  • Persistent, hard-to-control worry about everyday things
  • Physical symptoms — tight chest, shallow breathing, tension headaches, nausea
  • Difficulty sleeping or waking in the night with a busy mind
  • Avoiding situations, people or places that feel threatening
  • Feeling on edge, irritable or unable to relax
  • Panic attacks — sudden surges of intense fear that can feel overwhelming

What causes anxiety?

There's rarely a single cause. Anxiety can develop after a stressful or traumatic experience, build gradually during a difficult period of life, or feel like it's always just been part of how you are. Work pressure, relationship difficulties, health worries, major life changes and past experiences can all play a role. Sometimes there's no obvious trigger at all — and that's completely normal.

Understanding where your anxiety comes from is part of what therapy helps you explore, at your own pace.

How therapy helps with anxiety

Therapy gives you a confidential space to understand your anxiety — what drives it, what keeps it going, and what you can do differently. It's not about being told to think positively. It's practical, evidence-based work that genuinely changes how anxiety affects your life.

CBT

CBT helps you identify the thought patterns and behaviours that fuel anxiety and gradually replace them with more helpful responses. It's one of the most well-researched therapies for anxiety with strong evidence behind it.

ACT

ACT takes a different approach — rather than fighting anxious thoughts, it helps you relate to them differently so they have less power over what you do. Many people find this transformative, particularly if anxiety has been holding them back from things that matter to them.

What to expect from your first session

The first session is simply a conversation. Your therapist will take time to understand what you're experiencing and what you'd like to be different. There's no pressure to share more than you're comfortable with. Most people find that just having that first conversation brings some relief.
