Everyone needs support at times and everyone’s needs are unique to them. It’s important to work with a mental health professional who has the qualifications and experience to meet these. We are here to assist you in making the best choice for you.

We appreciate the first step is always the hardest. At Therapy North we want you to understand the types of support available and make it flexible, convenient and affordable. You choose whether you prefer face to face, online sessions or a mixture and how often you want them.

Our aim is to make therapy flexible, affordable and convenient so everyone can access the help they need. 

This starts with understanding the options available, as there are many different models of therapy, and one size doesn’t fit all. It can seem confusing to find the right solution. The Therapy North team will work with you and match you to a model and therapist that fits your needs. 

All our therapists are registered with their relevant professional body which gives reassurance they are professionally trained and accountable to the highest professional and ethical standards.

We offer sessions for adults and young people16+ in:

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

Counselling and Psychotherapy

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a talking therapy that can help you manage your problems by changing the way you think and behave.

CBT teaches coping skills for dealing with problems. It is based on the concept that your thoughts, feelings and actions are interconnected. Negative thoughts and patterns can be changed to improve how you feel.

Effective for treating a number of different mental health conditions particularly stress, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, OCD, bi-polar, phobias, panic attacks, sleep problems, trauma, PTSD, addiction, chronic pain, personality disorders and body dysmorphia.

Regular sessions are recommended that last 50 mins each for 6 to 20 appointments.

Counselling and Psychotherapy

Counselling and Psychotherapy are talking therapies that involve a therapist listening to your problems and helping you find ways to deal with emotional issues.

Given time and space to explore your problems with a trained therapist can support you to understand why you’re feeling the way you do, to develop coping mechanisms and find solutions.

Effective for treating anxiety, infertility, bereavement, relationship issues, work related stress, developmental trauma, identity issues, anger management, low self-esteem and low mood.

You can choose a short course of solution focussed counselling over a few weeks or months or a longer course of therapy depending on your issues of concern.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT is a type of therapy that encourages acceptance to deal with negative thoughts, feelings, symptoms or circumstances with an increased commitment to constructive activities that uphold your values and goals.

Your therapist helps you decide if a problem requires immediate action and change or must be accepted for what it is whilst you learn to modify the situation. It supports you to accept your current challenges and be more optimistic about your future goals. The theory is that it is counter-productive to try to control painful emotions as this ultimately leads to more distress.

Effective for treating substance misuse, addiction, anxiety, stress, depression, feeling overwhelmed and existential or excessive worry.

A regular course of 6 to 12 sessions is advised.
